Art, to me

Art is such a massive subject to me. It encompasses so much; culture, feelings, expression. It's something so special to me and affects everyone to some degree. Childrens' books are illustrated; ads are designed; furniture, houses, clothes, electronics, nearly everything has an artistic vision behind it.

I know that art or artists are still scorned today by some, but on the whole I think most respect art. However, I think it's also true that some have this idea that art has to be one definite thing. That a painting is great if it looks like a picture. I think this is a mistake in the general education of art we have, because art is not definite. To me, even as an artist, it's an unknown. There are so many possibilities.

It seems to me art means something different to everyone. To me it's a skill I am constantly trying to hone. I feel like if I stop drawing or painting I will rust and lose my progress. It keeps me on my toes. I take inspiration from other artists I see online; I follow a lot of art blogs, you see. When I see a piece one of these bloggers has painted in photoshop I'm amazed at first as I appreciate it, then I start to analyze it, looking for some technique I could apply to my own work.

A little trick here and there or imitating a style is one thing, the only real way to get "better" in art is to practice. Everyone says this because it holds true. It's important not to get down on yourself, your brain will always be better than your hands. Sometimes I have this complex majesty in my head, but when the paint brush hits the canvas it's only half as great as I wanted. It's best to make peace with these perceived "mistakes" and love it for what it is. Anatomically correct is not the epitome, it's not a restraint, but a base I would say.

Our society does have some certain expectations in art and I think its our job as artists to break them. I know that I have a tendency to seek approval and appreciation of my works, while really all that matters is what I think of it. As they say, everyone's a critic.

I have talked about some groups of less enlightened art viewers, but it's important that I mention the special art souls. They aren't as common, for sure, but it's such an experience to be with someone who really sees all art and loves it. They are just full of love, I guess. My favorite people are other artists like this. They inspire me to try new things and I am grateful for the few art teachers I've had. The connection between artists is so real and tangible.

In closing, I'll show you this poster hanging in my room that resonates with me:

MADRID, TE COMERÍA A VERSOS
